Artist's Description

Our house is on the Northern side of a valley looking toward the Brisbane CBD which is approx. 8km away. This valley, first settled in the 1800's is now heavily populated but the smoke was so heavy in July, only a faint colour shows through of any housing. The smoke is from a "controlled" burn which takes place on still days at this time of year. The idea is that the undergrowth that has built up during the summer (fuel) is burnt in a controlled way so that if it does catch alight as the weather becomes hotter and winds pick up, it does not become a "hot" fire where trees are destroyed...not to mention housing. As they have to burn on a windless day so that they can control it, it tends to just sit which is great if you have any lung problems. The Australian landscape and flora over thousands of years has been shaped by fire. The bird on the dead branch is an Australian Grey Butcher Bird.
