Description
This is a close up of lichen growing on the trunk of a Queensland Bottle Tree or Brachychiton rupestris. As the name suggests it is a unique tree whose trunk is shaped like a bottle with the branches and leaves coming from the neck. The trunk can reach 2 m in diameter and 18-20m in height. The tree drops its leaves during flowering and in drought. When is does, the thin outer bark takes on the role of photo synthesis so varies in how green it appears. The tree has two layers of bark, the thin outer layer and a rough layer which is visible in the picture. Between the rough bark layer and the trunk the tree stores water. In historic times, in times of drought the aborigines carved holes in the soft bark to create reservoir like structures. The seeds, roots, stems and bark have all traditionally been a source of food for people and animals alike. Another use has been made of the fibrous inner bark to make twine or rope and even woven together to make fishing nets. A very unique and interesting tree.
