Description
From observation, I think many of our native species respond to wet and dry periods rather than temperature. Our summer wet season did not eventuate but we have had unusual autumn rain. These paperbark trees have held onto their bark all summer and are now starting to peel. After a recent rain period, I glanced across to these this amazing blue colour. I don't know what it is...some form of minute fungal growth perhaps and the morning sun filtering through the leaves really highlighted the texture.
According to the Queensland Herbarium this is called Blue Stain Fungus.

Denise Clark replied:
Thank you so much Nancy. Now it has dried out, the blue has vanished. My husband missed it altogether so just as well I took a photo.
