Description
Platycerium bifurcatum, or elkhorn ferns due to the shape of their fronds. It is epiphytic and this member of the family is native to our rainforests but grows readily on trees in our gardens. This one is in my garden. In this image I have taken a close up of the back pad as I find it fascinating. The plants have tufted roots growing from a short rhizome that bears two types of fronds, basal and fertile fronds. Basal fronds (as shown) are sterile, shield or kidney shaped and laminate against the tree and protect the fern's roots of damage and desiccation.
This image shows the new growth and reminds of a a lazy renovator which just puts new layers of wallpaper over old...hence the title.
Twenty Percent of all sales will be donated to either Rainforest Rescue or Bush Heritage. Both of these organisation do invaluable work for the environment.
